Last month I had made Undhiyo which is a gujarati tasty winter special dish
One of the important ingredient is the green garlic which struck to my mind while doing the preparing the list of vegetables needed for undhiyo.I couldnt find the green garlic in hyderabad market .Thats when I discovered this thought of growing green garlic at home.
Green garlic is young garlic which is harvested before the cloves have begun to mature. The resulting vegetable resembles a scallion, with a deep green stalk and a pale white bulb. It can often be found for sale at a farmers' market in the spring, and can also be grown at home relatively easily
I had lots of peeled garlic (with the white cover removed) dumped in my fridge in TUPPERWARE container. Of late I had seen green shoot coming from many of the garlic cloves . Thats when this idea stuck to my mind & I decided to experiment & Finally I succeeded in getting fresh green garlic from my kitchen garden.
Ingredients:
25 garlic cloves (fresh / ones stored in fridge for 15 -20 days)
a plastic pot /tray filled with soil or mud ( I had used icecream container)
Method:
1.Take a plastic container / tray /pot.
2. Make 2 holes at the base of container this will help excess water to drain otherwise garlic will rot.
3. Fill it with soil. Pour little water in the soil just enough to make it wet.
4. Next make a 1 inch depth hole in soil with help of a spoon .
5.Now plant the garlic in soil with the narrow /tapering end on top & broad end in the soil.
6 Sprinkle water & wait for a week you will see green shoots emerging on the second / third day.
7.Check daily as you will see the leaves emerging & oh my god the leaves start growing.
8. ITS A GREAT FEELING TO SEE GARLIC GROWING DAY BY DAY.
9.In 3-4 weeks you will get the lovely green home made garlic ready from your kitchen garden.
Update :Below picture is of second batch of garlic which I had sown in bangalore .I had simply sown garlic pods around palm tree pot.
See the result beautiful green garlic growing & blooming into long leaves.
