Oats Idli Recipe | Rice Urad dal Oats healthy Idli

If you are fussy about eating oats then make idlis, dosas or chivda from them. Nobody can even guess whether oats is added in the idli.

Make YOUR Family eat this oats idli without uttering a word to anyone what are the ingredients and all idlis will be vanished in no time.Simple oats idli recipe for a healthy breakfast or snack option for people from all age groups.

I have posted instant oats idli earlier where you dont need any fermentation.
But todays idli is made with rice urad dal oats using fermentation method

The recipe have used is recipe for normal idli recipe but made with slight modifications. You have to ferment the batter that’ s the only preparation. So start making 15-16 hrs in advance before the day you want to actually make them.

Ingredients
Parboiled (idli) Rice/sona masuri rice – 2 cups
Urad dal – ½ cup
Fenugreek seeds – 1 teaspoon
Oats – ½ cup
Aval (Poha) – ½ cup
salt – as per taste
Method :
  1. Soak rice and urad dhal separately for 5 to 6 hours. Fenugreek seeds can be added along with urad dhal.
  2. Soak oats and aval together half-an-hour to one hour before grinding.

  3. Grind urad dhal and fenugreek to a soft paste. Then grind rice, oats and aval together to a coarse paste.
  4. Mix all the paste together with salt and keep it overnight or atleast 8 hours for fermentation.
  5. Grease the idli stand with oil .pour 1 laddle of batter to individual moulds .Steam them for around 10-12 mins (if using cooker, do not use the whistle add 2 glass of water to cooker).
  6. Leave it for around 5 mins before opening the steamer/cooker (or else, the steam falls on idlis and make them mushy).
  7. With a wet spoon cleanly remove the idlis.

Tips :

1)The urad dal should be ground till it super smooth and it should be thick. Even though it is ground for a long time, rice will have some grits in it and it is perfectly ok.

2)The batter should be thick, not thin or runny.

3)Use a large container when you are fermenting, because my batter rised too much and a little over flowed.

4).Proper fermentation of minimum 8-10 hours is very important to get soft idlis but in winter it may need much more time .If living in cold places you can even place the batter in a preheated oven and turn the oven light ON.

Instant Oats Appe| No fermentation quick sooji appe

Eat Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince, and Dine like a Pauper This is an ancient proverb that we all are aware of .This fantastic nutritious packed Dosa made with  Oats and Rice is a perfect breakfast or end dinner for the day.The flavor of the Oats in the Dosa is a great plus .

We all are well aware that oats is a very healthy and nutritious food and as breakfast is the most vital meal of the day, the perfect way to start it would be with a bowl of oats. There is no doubt that oatmeal has been ranked as one of the best foods which can fight against cholesterol and a single bowl of oatmeal contains several vital nutrients such as complex carbohydrates, B vitamins, fiber, and minerals such as phosphorous, iron, selenium, and calcium. The best benefits of oatmeal for weight loss is that it is a great source of fiber. The oatmeal is a soluble fiber, which means your body slowly moves this food product through your digestive system, allowing you to feel more satisfied for long amounts of time.

There is no doubt over the fact that a fiber rich diet leads to lowering of cholesterol and it also helps to control diabetes, obesity and cancer.

Knowing the health benefits of oats in our diet, I thought of adding oats in traditional maharashtrian tikhat (spicy) appe  recipe  giving it a healthy  twist .Today I will be posting instant oats appe which needs no fermentation. Its a quick 15 minute recipe.Below is step by step recipe

You can even prepare oats appe using fermented /leftover idli dosa batter. Normally tikhat appe are prepared from urad dal & rice ground with few other ingredients & then fermented overnight. To this fermented batter u have to add onion, coriander leaves, green chillies, curry leaves etc & yes of course powdered oats to prepare  oats  appe from leftover idli/dosa batter.

Appe is also known as Paddu(Kannada), appe(Konkani/ marathi), ponganalu (Telugu), paniyaram(Tamil), unniyappam(Malayalam). To make this we require a special tava (Appe Tava), Usually we get two kinds of tavas, one of black colour(of cast iron) and other  non stick  tava. I have used non stick tava so that appe dont stick to the tava(GRIDDLE).

Ingredients :

1/2 cup fine Sooji (rava) + ½ cup idli rava  (I have even tried this appe by using normal fine  sooji & they turned out well & crispy)

1 small onion

1 cup  saffola oats powdered

1 cup yoghurt (dahi/curd)

3-5 green chillies

1 tbsp jeera (cumin) ( optional)

¼ tsp baking soda ( I used eno salt)

1/4 cup Coriander leaves

1/2 carrot chopped (optional)

Salt, oil

8-10 Curry leaves

Method:

1.Chop the onions ,carrot and coriander, curry leaves finely.

2.Dry roast oats & once cool grind to a fine powder.

3.Mix all the above ingredients with oats powder ,except baking soda  to form  a thick paste. Add little water to thin it out a little.(dont add too much water just 1-2 tsp).

3 Add 1 tsp oil into each groove & heat the Appe/ Appam pan/albeskiver pan (chk below picture)

4. Drop a bit of batter to check and if you hear the sizzling sound, the pan is ready to cook appe.

5.Now add baking soda mix well & immediately Add the prepared sooji batter into each of the grove, so that ¾ of the grove is covered and then cover it with a lid.

6.Reduce the heat a little bit at this time. After a minute or so, open the lid and with a kitchen knife, run it around the edge of the appe, to see if it is browning.

7 Make sure the appe does not turn dark brown or black in color. The one in the middle is the one that gets dark fast.

8.If some of the appe can be easily displaced from the grove flip  it on the other side, add oil and cook until done. Let the remaining appe cook correctly and turn them when done.

9•When turned on the other side, add 1 tsp oil again and reduce the heat even further and there is no need to cover with lid. this will cook faster.

10. Serve with tomato chutney/ idli chutney/ coconut coriander chutney/Vellulipaaya kaaram podi - andhra style

Knowing the health benefits of oats in our diet, I had bought saffola oats (masala flavour & pepper flavour) from ratnadeep super market . Since I have a liking for dosas at home or even in restaurants, I thought of utilizing  these oat packets for making oats dosa for last sat weekend .I served them with spicy peanut chutney andhra style .The batter fermented  well and the dosas were very light and crispy resulting in healthy dosas.
