Onion Tomato Chutney | kanda(Pyaz) tamatar chutni


Tasty onion tomato chutney is a south indian way of preparing a tangy and spicy tomato chutney or paste with onions and tomato. Tasty and spicy tomato and onion chutney can be refrigerated and used as desired as an accompaniment to main course, starter,idli,dosa,uttapam,appe .
We can make onion and tomato chutney in different ways. By adding and changing few ingredients we can change the taste. Ripe red tomatoes blended with onions and sauteed to perfection will be the right definition for this spicy kanda tamata chutney.





Ingredients:

1 big sized onion
2 tomatoes
6 -7 red chillies (choose no of chillies as per your taste)
Garlic - 5-6 cloves
ginger half inch
1 tsp. of tamarind extract /lemon juice
Salt



For seasoning
1 tsp. of mustard and urad dal
A sprig of curry leaves
pinch hing asafoetida
Oil

Method

1.Heat oil in a small pan and add the red chillies,garlic & ginger
 2.Fry till they turn slightly brown and add the onions
 3.Fry them till they become translucent and add the tomatoes.
 4.Add little salt and fry till the tomatoes become soft * pulpy
 5.Let them cool and grind them to a smooth paste with tamarind/lemon juice.
 6 In a  pan, add oil, add mustard seed when it stops spluttering add urad dal, followed by curry leaves, saute for a min.
7.Now add the seasoning to grounded chutney
8. Enjoy with RAVA idli /dosa /appam /kanchipuram idlis



Tip/variation:

 1.Choose tomatoes which are  ripe and red for red  colour
 2.Add  1 tsp each of urad dal(spilt black gram ) and chana dal (dahalya) in step 1 & continue with the rest  of the process
3.The chutney keeps well in fridge for 2 weeks or even more if sauteed well enough!
4. Add oil liberally as this chutney demands  more oil
