Lal Bhopla bharit is a typical marathi dish .bhopla means pumpkin, lal means red, & bharit is a mashed salad.
If you mix dahi /curd/yoghurt in bharit it is known as raita.
Difference between bharit and raita
- In bharit the vegetable is cooked completely mashed ,mixed with green chilli, sugar, peanut powder ,salt & then tempered & mixed with lime juice.
- In raita vegetable raw or cooked is seasoned with spices like red chilli powder,coriander-cumin powder, sugar, pepper powder, chat masala ,salt & then mixed with dahi/curd/yoghurt.Adding roasted peanut powder (shengdana koot) to raita is optional, but most maharshtrians add it
pumpkin is known as kaddu in hindi, bhopla in marathi and Gummadikaya in telugu
Lal Bhopla Bharit or Lal Bhopla Raita is a great accompaniment to rotis. It also goes very well with spicy pulaos and biryanis where its sweetness offsets the spiciness.
you can eat this raita for fasting /vrat in that case skip mustard & curry leaf & use ghee for tempering
You can cook pumpkin in two ways .You can boil the peeled pumpkin in the cooker or cook pumpkin with 2-3 tbsp water covered with lid .
