Dagad Phool | Pathar Phool| marathi Black Stone Flower


Todays post is about dagad phool .

Dagad phool is a spice which is an important ingredient of famous aromatic maharashtrian goda masala or kala masala.

A tea spoon of this masala in any dish, brightens the whole dish.

i discovered about this spice in hyderabad when i ran out of my stock of goda masala & decided to make it on my own.thats when i searched for this spice and got it in hypercity,hitech city,hyderabad


 what is dagad phool  ?

Dagad phool is a soft, brown and black colored lichen.

 



 It is known as Dadagphool in marathi ,Black Stone Flower in english ,Kalpasi or Pathar Ka Phool in english,Kallupachi in telugu .

The spice is used in many popular Indian dishes.It is a very rare component used in the Garam Masala Spice Mix. It is very popular in Indian delicacies and snacks. When it is used in small quantities in curries, it releases a strong woody aroma and flavor.
. It is widely used in Chettinad cuisine and a little in Hyderabadi and Marathi cuisine

. It is an edible lichen flora (a type of fungus), which grows on trees, rocks and stones.

Botanically, it belongs to the Parmelia Perlata family and it is referred to as 'foliose' meaning that each flower is vaguely similar to foliage or leaves and florae. It also resembles mushrooms. The upper surface is dark green or black and is whiter inside. It is found in abundance in the Chettinad region, one of the driest regions of South India.



Uses of dagadphool

Dagad phool are commonly found in any markets or with spice smiths and it has uses in many dishes in hyderabadi.Similar to those of sweet pepper it has quite mild aromatic flavor it is not only used for aromas in soup preparations but also used as soup thickeners.
A Tree lichen, often used in meat dishes.
Stone flowers have medical properties to cure HIV virus. Stone flowers are the biological indicators of air pollution.
It is a good pain reliever and also promotes early healing of wounds sue to its bitter taste.
It helps treating the skin related problem due to its cold potency. It helps in reducing any kind of inflammation in body.
