Upwas APPE :
Yet another interesting & innovative maharashtrian recipe especially for fasting (upwas /vrat) day.I had seen this on one of the marathi tv channel & had tried last thursday .
Appe is also known as Paddu(Kannada), appe(Konkani/ marathi), ponganalu (Telugu), paniyaram(Tamil), unniyappam(Malayalam).
To make this we require a special tava (Appe Tava), Usually we get two kinds of tavas, one of black colour(of cast iron) and other non stick tava.
I have used non stick tava so that appe dont stick to the tava(GRIDDLE).
This is a miniature sabudana vada version or you can say sabudana wada with very less oil .The ingredients used for sabudana appe are similar to sabudana vada with addition of few ingredients. This is a good fasting option for calorie conscious people.
Ingredients
1 cup - sabudana (sago) soaked for minimum 4 hours in water
3/4 cup - boiled mashed potato
2 green chilies - grind to coarse paste in mixie
1/2 cup - peanut powder ( shengdana kut)
1 tsp - sugar
1 tsp cumin seeds crushed lightly
1 tsp cumin powder
3 tsp - dahi ( yoghurt)
Salt to taste
ghee /oil
Water as required
Method :
1. Mix sabudana (sago) with boiled potatoes add green chilies ,peanut powder ( shengdana kut),cumin seeds, sugar, dahi ,salt & sugar. Add litte water to make a paste of above mixture.

3. Grease the holes of appe patra with ghee or oil. Pour the mixture prepared in step 1 in the individual holes of tava with help of spoon.
4. Place tava on gas & cover it with a lid. Cook for 2-3 minutes till it is cooked (turns brownish in colour) .next turn the appes with help of spoon so that cooked side is on top till the other side gets cooked .Add ghee or oil if required.
5. Remove from tava & serve upwas appe with upwas groundnut coconut chutney / fasting dahi chutney / plain yoghurt.
