Karli cha loncha |karlyacha lonche |karela ka achar|Bittergourd pickle

Bittergourd pickle ???????? surprised no no do not run away hearing the name

It doesnt at all taste bitter or kadwa .Most of us avoid this vegetable mainly because of its bitter taste .Exception being me I like recipes like stir fried karli bhaji & bharleli karli

Had seen this on a marathi tv channel & thought of giving it a try.Result was superb.your kids cannot even recognise that it is made of karela.

Ingredients :

2 medium /3 small bittergourd (karla/karela)
1 tsp gul (jaggery)
1 tsp goda /kala masala (click here for recipe)
1 tsp red chilli powder
1 tsp rai (mustard seeds)
1 tsp hing
1 tsp mango pickle masala- khaar ( You can use the khaar ( mango masala) from your existing pickle bottle)
Oil 1.5 tbsp

Method:
1. Wash karli & trim off the ends ,Now cut in small cubes & keep in bowl of salty water for 15-30 minutes.Squeeze off the water

2. Next add oil, hing, rai, karli pieces,Cover & cook till karli pieces are done (say 8-10 minutes)

3.Next add red chilli powder, kala masala ,mango pickle masala /khaar,salt & jaggery & stir well till jaggery melts .Switch off the gas & let it cool .

4.  Store it in an airtight container in refrigerator. It remains good for around 15 days.
