Moong Dal Halwa recipe | diwali special

Moong Dal Halwa is a Rajasthani North Indian sweet, usually prepared in winters.

I had tasted this halwa in gokhale poli bhaji kendra in thane & it was truly delicious .I decided to make it at home when i saw this in one of the tv channel cookery show.

A Rajasthani dessert made from moong dal simmered in milk and garnished with almonds & saffron. Give your taste buds a royal treat after a gourmet meal.

Diwali being near I tried this halwa & posting the same .

Ingredients :

 Moong dal   - 1 cup
 Ghee - 3/4 cup
 Mawa (Khoya)  - 1/2 cup
 Sugar - 1 cup
 Cashew Nuts - 6-8
 Dried Raisins - 6-8
 Cardamom powder - 1 tsp
Almonds - 5 (Cut  length wise into small pieces)

Method :

1.Wash the moong dal and soak it in milk  for 4 to 5 hours.

2.Take out the moong dal from water and grind it coarsely without water. Don't grind it too fine.

3. Heat the frying pan and put ghee and moong dal in the frying pan, then stir with the frying spoon, on medium flame. In 15 to 20 minutes moong dal will be properly cooked
(Moong dal is cooked  when it doesn't stick to the frying pan and you can see the ghee getting separated from moong dal).

4. Add Mawa (khoya) in a separate frying pan and cook on low flame. Then mix it in the moong dal.

5. Next add sugar and water in a utensil and heat it. When the water starts boiling cook for another 5 minutes on low flame, and prepare a wire like syrup.

6.Mix this syrup in the moong dal, along with cashew nuts and raisins. Now stir this halwa on low flame for about  5 to 7 minutes, halwa will be ready. Switch off the burner. Mix the  Cardamom powder in the halwa.

7. Garnish with cashewnuts ,almonds and raisins  & serve halwa cool or hot.

Tips:

1. In step 5 you can make a mixture of water & milk & add sugar instead of using only water.
2. Instead of khoya you can use  equal milk powder mixed in half quantity( of milkpowder)  of lukewarm milk  or water
